10 Reasons to visit or live in Taormina, Sicily
1. Scenery. Taormina in Sicily is
simply a stunning location and it offers views which
are arguably as good as any worldwide. The main village
is located on top of the cliff and from the village
you have views of the Etna volcano, the coast and
the countryside. The view and scenery is excellent!
2. Beach - The beach in Taormina
is accessible from the village on top of the cliff
by cable-car. You can walk down the winding staircase
to the beach or jump on the cable car for a small
fee. The beach
itself is small but cute and definitely worth visiting.
3. Food - Although not specific
to Taormina, there are some excellent and high quality
but affordable restaurants in the village. There are
in fact dozens upon dozens of restaurants and you
will be spoilt for choice. For those of you who love
fresh sea-food you cannot go wrong.
4. As a base - Taormina is an excellent
location to use also as a base for seeing some of
the other main places in Sicily. From Taormina you
can easily travel to the lovely town of Siracusa to
the South, whilst Catania and the Etna Volcano are
located about 45 minutes drive North.
5. Weather - The weather is very
good for most of the year. August is perhaps too hot
whilst the other months between May and October generally
are very nice months to visit weather wise.
6. To study Italian - There are
a few language schools in Taormina village for studying
Italian and what better location than here to learn?
You can study for 2 or 3 hours each day and then focus
on enjoying the beach during your free time.
7. Shopping - The village has a
few hundred shops and restaurants, all in a long street
and also in various side streets. There are many fashionable
items, food items, souvenirs and many other things
available. For women there are plenty of shoe shops
and some good bars for the men!
8. Theatre - The Greek theatre in
Taormina is one of the main attractions and in the
summer there are performances available to attend.
The theatre is open-air and also acts as the location
for the annual film festival each year.
9. Pace of life - The pace of life
in Taormina is slow and this makes for a very relaxing
break if you are just looking to unwind and take it
easy.
10. Tourist catered for - Traveling
some parts of Sicily can be difficult if you do not
speak Italian so Taormina may be very go do for some
tourists who struggle with communication. Many of
the menus come with English, German and French translations
and many staff do speak some languages. The other
side of this of course is that some restaurants do
charge tourist prices but overall this is a wonderful
town.
