Renaissance Music Festival in Erice, Sicily

Renaissance Music Festival

The Festival of Medieval and Renaissance Music, a week-long musical event, is held in Erice every summer. The event attracts artists and musicians as well as music-loving crowds from all over the world. The town of Erice, which is set on a small mountain that overlooks Trapani, has a fourteenth-century cathedral. This ancient historic structure is the center of three important annual events of Erice—the Easter celebrations, the annual music Erice in Sicilyfestival of Erice and the week-long Festival of Medieval and Renaissance Music, which is held annually in August.

The festival provides an opportunity for bands and ensembles such as Lucidarium, which specialise in Renaissance and Medieval music, to showcase their musical productions. The event strives to bring back to life half-forgotten repertoires of the Medieval and the Renaissance ages and thereby enhance awareness about musical forms and genres that enjoyed great popularity in the Middle Ages and still do.

Besides the Festival of Renaissance Music, Erice plays host to other interesting religious and musical events and houses important historical structures and places of interest such as Segesta, Via del Sale, Isola di Mozia, Marsala, San Vito lo Capo and Palermo. In fact, Erice is widely held to have been inhabited since the days of pre-history and therefore has a rich historical tradition. Visitors can also combine the pleasures of Renaissance music with the joys of tasting exquisite Sicilian wines.
