Almond Blossom Festival, Agrigento, Sicily
Almond Blossom Festival
The Almond Blossom Festival (known locally as the Sagra del Mandorio in Fiore) is a harvest festival that first started in the 1930s. Initially the event was celebrated as a simple country traditional festival, but over the years the event has attracted international interest and tourists flock to the island in time for harvesting the almonds.
Agrigento, a small town located in the Valle dei Templi, where Roman ruins can be found, is the venue of the almond blossom festival. Event highlights include concerts and dances featuring traditional music and regional folk costumes. Some of the other events at the festival include a fireworks show and an elaborate children’s procession where the participants don colourful and elaborate costumes. There is also a theatre and performance area that is built in the vicinity of the Temple of Giunone. Musical performers and artists from all over
Italy and the world flock to the town to perform during the festival.
Visitors who come to Agrigento for the almond blossom festival can enjoy a walk amid the beautiful temple ruins while admiring the almond blossoms. Most of the events are held in the Valle dei Templi, which is accessible from the heart of Agrigento by bus. Other venues include the Teatro Pirandello and the Palace of Congress.
People interested in participating in the festival are advised to book their accommodations early. Many of the town’s accommodation options can be found on the Via Atenea, Agrigento’s main street.
