February - Annual carnivals and events in Sicily, Italy

Sciacca (Agrigento) - Carnival  

This is a lively festival which sees the streets of Sciacca filled in this annual festival every February. Its a great chance to sample some traditional Italian foods and culture. A lot of the locals get dressed up for this festival which is one of hte highlights of the year for Sciacca locals and tourists to the area.

Acireale (Catania) - Carnival

Another one of the many carnivals which take place annualy in Sicily, Acireale in the province of Catania is a wlecome addition to the regional events. Acireale is a lively and truly traditional carnival with its roots going back to the 16th century..

Noto (Syarcuse) - Festa di San Corrado

Saint Corrado is celebrated by the inhabitants of Noto (Syracuse) twice a year: 19 February, day of his death, and the last week of August. On Carnival time in Agrigentoboth dates there is a procession of the saint's mortal remains through the town with celebrations of devouts. During the procession of 19 February the effigy of the saint is taken round some churches in Noto and according to the tradition when it arrives in front of St Antonio church it seems to become so heavy that it is impossible to lift it up despite the devouts' efforts.

Almond Blossom Festival, Agrigento

As Spriing approaches, this festival is a key event in Agrigento each year. The Almond Blossom Festival incorporates a number fo events including live shows, food stalls and a beauty contest. A great event if you are in Agrigento in February. More info on the Almond Blossom Festival.
