Fitting in with Sicilian people and culture

How to live like a Sicilian

When visiting any country there is always the issue of culture in the respect that you need to ensure that you do not infringe upon the cultural norms of the hosting nation. Sicily has a reputation as being a friendly and laid back Sicilian beachdestination where people lead long and peaceful lives which makes it an attractive location for people to buy second homes. Despite the apparent laid back attitude there are still certain behavioural rules which can help you to settle in Sicily.

Dress Code in Sicily

If you want to be accepted as a local as opposed to a tourist you should leave the flip flops and surf boarding shorts for the beach and dress more smartly when walking around in public. It is especially not recommended to flash a lot of flesh given that this is still a traditionally Catholic country. Head down to the beaches though and then you will see a very different side to the the dress code, with men and women alike, wearing skimpy swimwear.

Get in the habit of having a siesta

It is tradition in Sicily for everybody to have a nap in the middle of the day. During this period the shops will close and there is generally no business conducted, so be careful not to book any appointments or make plans for this time of day. The concept of siesta is though slowly changing with the younger generation less used to taking a short sleep in the early afternoon.

Drunken behaviour

In the UK it is common to see drunken people walking around the streets making noise and causing a scene, but in Sicily it is very rare and extremely frowned upon. If you wish to get drunk it is best to keep it to a private party. It is more common to enjoy a glass or wine with a meal rather tahn drinking heaviy.
