History in Agrigento

The island of Sicily is reasonably small but it still has so much to offer the tourist who makes the wise choices of visiting. There are a many different regions which are worth visiting, with one of them being Agrigento, a city on the west coast of the island. It is highly historic city which dates back to 6000BC, and as such, there are many sites of historical value scattered around the city.

One of the most high profile historic attractions in the town of Agrigento is the valley of temples which is home to the Temple of Concord, an absolutely magnificent Greek temple which has stood the test of time superbly. There Agrigentoare not many better examples of architecture from this time period and you will find yourself lost in thought as you brain tries to comprehend the millions of people who have seen this building over so many centuries.

The valley also has many other smaller temples as well as houses and streets which have survived from the same period.
Another attraction for the visitor in Agrigento is the Romanesque Gothic cathedral which dominates the city centre. It was initially built in the 11th century and still stands in many parts as it did in those early days.

Other historic points of interest in the City of Agrigento include the church of Saint Nicola and the archaeological museums. This is one of the best areas of Sicily for tourists to visit and if you are visiting on an organised tour, you will probably already find that the tour will include Agrigento. 

A combination of Agrigento, Taormina, the Etna and the Aeolian Islands can make for a great combination of places for one trip.
