Taormina, Sicily tourist and accommodation guide
Taormina, Sicily visitors guide
Taormina is one of the most fashionable resorts in Sicily and commands high prices for its undoubted charms. The town offers stunning views and an amazing Graeco-Roman theatre that sits high above the sea.
There is no doubt that Taormina is one of the best places to visit and stay in Sicily but it does come at a price. In comparison to the rest of the island, Taormina is expensive when it comes to hotels and eating out. The most expensive time to visit is during the school holidays but if you can go slightly out of season, the prices do come tumbling down like the occasional mists of ash from an active Mount Etna.
Taormina is a town that prides itself on its beautiful buildings, its panoramic views and its floral displays. In spring and early summer the streets are not yet crowded but the sun is already making a big impression. Many of the hotels have fabulous swimming pools and the nightlife really buzzes.
One of the fascinations is to see Taormina’s railway station which is down by the sea, far below the town which
looks out, high up above. Taormina station is in a coastal hamlet called Giardini Naxos and the station is known as Taormina - Giardini. The line connects Messina and Siracusa and the line is also served by trains from Rome. To get up to the town from the railway station definitely requires transport and there is a bus every thirty minutes. The journey up the winding road to Taormina takes about ten minutes.
