Siracusa visitors guide
Situated in the south-east corner of Sicily, and partly on the tiny island of Ortigia, is Siracusa, a town that was created by the ancient Greeks and later developed by Romans. It is a busy town with much going for it including superb restaurants and hotels and some truly breathtaking archaeological structures.
Siracusa is a great place to spend a few days as there is plenty see and do. The town is also a good location for taking day trips to see other parts of Sicily and taking in Roman amphitheatres, the Baroque towns of Ragusa and Noto, and the spirited city of Catania.
Joined to Sicily by three road bridges, the island of Ortigia is particularly popular with tourists as it has most of the archaeological sites, is a compact and, therefore, great for strolling around.
One of the joys of visiting Siracusa is that it can be done on a budget as it is not necessary to spend a load of money on good quality accommodation. There are masses of places to eat in Siracusa including Sicily’s version
of fast-food outlets. A real pleasure is to visit one of the town’s coffee shops where there are patisseries that put pounds on just from looking.
For quality dining, there are plenty of good restaurants from which to choose in Siracusa and especially on Ortigia. For low cost eating out there are some excellent pizzerias offering a good choice pizzas and a friendly, lively environment. Some of the more popular trattoria-pizzerias include wonderful seafood dishes.
Simply, Siracusa is a great way to discover Sicily and to visit some fabulous archaeological sites including an amazing Greek theatre; and to eat and drink well, without it costing a small fortune.
